In the current era, the sun is set against the backdrop of the constellation of Sagittarius during December 16 and January 14. The sun sign is indicative of the manner in which the individual finds expression, for it is the source of the life force. The solar energies absorb and reflect the characteristics of the sign in which the sun finds itself: and the individual born at this time of the year will find that, at heart, he or she embodies Sagittarian traits. The other two most important personal factors within the birth chart are the Ascendant and Moon. If either of these are positioned within the Sagittarius field of influence, then the individual will also find that he or she reflects Sagittarian traits, as would anyone with Jupiter significantly placed in their chart.

Sagittarius is symbolised by the archer, a creature that is half man and half beast. The centaur has his arrow aimed high into the sky and, for Sagittarians, the sky is the limit. Optimism is one of the obvious traits they possess and, because of their all-encompassing view of life, Sagittarius is a source of inspiration to others. Those born under the sign of the archer are admired for their self confidence, which is the natural partner of optimism. Quick wit, forethought, breadth-of-view and logic are but a few of their positive attributes; and it is only natural that one with such a high degree of intelligence should be lured into the halls of higher wisdom. With Sagittarian abilities it is quite likely these people will do well in their career, with many finding themselves in some sort of professional sphere, particularly in the fields of science, medicine, law, travel, philosophy, education or religion.

Jupiter is the ruling planet of Sagittarius and is intrinsically associated with the concept of Justice. Thus it is that Sagittarians generally have a great deal of respect for the law and its processes. Truth is a lateral expansion of the concept of Justice, and it is rare to find a Sagittarian who will distort the truth. In fact, one can rely upon them to be candid to a point lacking in diplomacy. However, there is no intended malice in such slips of the tongue: they just sometimes suffer from "foot in mouth disease". Somehow, the truth just seems to blurt out with the very best of intentions at heart. Good intentions are so much part of Sagittarius’ psychological make up because of their strong compassion for others. However, should their good faith be violated, they are quick to temper and can certainly display an ability to really put the offending party in place.

Most Sagittarians have a strong sense of the spiritual, whether it manifests in the traditional religious form or a sense of the spiritual. This is strongly related to their sense of right and wrong, along with their eternal optimism, because these concepts form the broad basis to Sagittarius’ understanding of the universe. Sagittarius has a feeling for the intangible greatness of being, the fundamental purpose of life which is intricately woven through the fabric of the Universe. Thus it is that many Sagittarians have a somewhat intuitive nature, being able to tune into this universal ebb and flow of life.

As Jupiter is also symbolic of expansion, so the native of Sagittarius requires plenty of space. They not only love to travel, but also have plenty of energy to expend in the great outdoors where there is room to breathe and experience nature at its best. Nature seems to act as a source of inspiration to Sagittarius’ freedom loving personality. Naturally enough, independence is extremely important also and, when they feel enclosed by any situation, will feel a desire to escape. All of these characteristics mentioned above present the positive side of the Sagittarian nature; but the negativity inherent in everything will sometimes find manifestation. In such cases, restlessness, uncertainty, misjudgment and distortion of the truth are probable. Not all of these qualities are likely to be evident at any one time; but with the average person there will be a blending of all traits to produce a fairly evenly balanced personality.
